By accessing or using Open Altar ("the Service"), you agree to be bound by these Terms of Service ("Terms"). If you do not agree to these Terms, do not use the Service.

Open Altar, Inc. ("we," "us," "our") reserves the right to modify these Terms at any time. Continued use of the Service after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated Terms.

2. What Open Altar Is — and Is Not

Open Altar IS:

  • A platform for spiritual reflection, journaling, and personal growth

  • Medical care, psychiatric treatment, or psychotherapy
  • Mental health counseling or crisis intervention
  • Pastoral counseling or clergy services
  • Religious instruction or spiritual direction from ordained professionals
  • A substitute for professional mental health services, medical advice, or emergency services

If you are experiencing a mental health crisis, suicidal thoughts, or medical emergency, immediately contact emergency services (911 in the U.S.), call the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, or seek care from a licensed professional.

3. User Eligibility & Certifications

This Service is not intended for use by minors. By creating an account or using Open Altar, you certify to us that:

  • You are at least 18 years of age (or the age of majority in your jurisdiction)

  • Notifying us immediately of any unauthorized access

You may not share your account, impersonate others, or create accounts using false information.

5. Assumption of Risk & AI Limitations

You acknowledge and agree that:

  • Open Altar is powered by AI technology (including third-party models from Anthropic and OpenAI) and may produce inaccurate, incomplete, misleading, or inappropriate content
  • AI-generated spiritual guidance, reflections, prayers, meditations, and insights are not authored by humans and do not represent the views of any religious authority, clergy, or licensed professional
  • The Service provides reflective content for personal growth purposes only
  • You are solely responsible for how you interpret and act upon content provided by the Service
  • The Service does not replace professional guidance, community support, or human relationships
  • AI-generated pattern detection (themes, emotions, spiritual states) is approximate and should not be relied upon as a clinical or diagnostic tool
  • Sacred text citations generated by AI may contain errors in reference, translation, or context
  • We make no guarantees about specific spiritual, emotional, psychological, or therapeutic outcomes or benefits from using the Service

  • Reverse engineer, decompile, or attempt to extract source code

7. AI-Generated Content & Voice

The Service generates text and audio content using artificial intelligence. Regarding this content:

  • AI-generated reflections, prayers, meditations, and voice audio are created programmatically and are not reviewed by humans before delivery
  • Voice prayers and meditations are synthesized using AI text-to-speech technology — they are not recordings of real people
  • You may not represent AI-generated content as human-authored spiritual counsel, professional advice, or official religious teaching
  • You may not use AI-generated voice content for commercial purposes, redistribution, or to impersonate a real person
  • We reserve the right to modify, limit, or discontinue AI features, voice options, or generation limits at any time
